I Have to Try and Get to You
(a poem to God)

Earth is neither here nor there
A band of static in the air
These whirling dreams to misconstrue
I have to try and get to you

Postulations every day
Absurdities in the way
The broken watch that needs repair
The death of Hamlet at the fair

Bravely thinking nothing’s cheap
The whisper from the rubble heap
Your flowers moistened with the dew
I have to try and get to you

The broom of time has swept the tiles
Old ones left with vacant smiles
The slaughtered cow the dying ewe
I have to try and get to you

The thundercloud above the heath
The gathered rain, the living death
Calculating all the while
The lowness in the braggart’s smile

The wren loosens his lonely call,
O’er bramble and the switchgrass tall
These drifting tides play peekaboo
I have to try and get to you.
